How did you two meet?
We met online, okcupid actually! I (Lydia) had just moved to hull and didn’t know a single person. We started chatting in March of 2015 but didn’t actually meet for our first date until august of that year. When we met in person it felt so right as we had spent so much time talking and getting to know each other and have been together ever since.
What about the proposal, how did it go?
I very nearly scuppered Chloes plans for proposing. My best friend had come to visit (now I know this was all planned), we had been out the night before and the last thing I wanted was to get dressed and get out of the house like Chloe and my friend seemed determined to do. I really got moody as although I was being forced out hungover, Chloe for some reason got to stay at home! After walking around hull shopping incredibly and getting increasingly cranky I finally was able to go home. As I walked through the door There was a full scavenger hunt set up around our house with small poems written with Chloe at the end of it holding a ring. I still have the poems and get teased regularly for nearly ruining the whole plan!
What was your wedding style/inspo?
We started off with a very different style to what we ended up with. We got sucked into the concept of making things lighter and brighter and mainstream aesthetic initially however soon learned that it was not for us! Our wedding style and inspiration was described by our suppliers as “dark romantic fairytale”. We wanted to be different but still classic so we went with lots of burgandys, golds and didn’t shy away from the black. From our tarot card “the lovers” invites to our all black wedding cake we made sure that our wedding was what felt right for us. A good friend of ours ( https://instagram.com/betty_banzai at namaste tattoo) designed us our own custom flash sheet for us to have a temporary tattoo station for our guests. Several people ended up with neck tattoos!
Tell us about your dress!
My dress. My Rebecca Ingram Hattie Lane wedding dress! I was so terrified of dress shopping, I had visions of me not fitting into anything I liked or not finding anything to my style and the second dress I tried on (the first one selected by the lovely ladies of Elizabeth Kate) was the one. I never even thought I could find something that made me feel so beautiful. Perfect neckline, the right size lace and the shimmer underlay cinched it. And Elizabeth Kate even added drop lace sleeves to make it just perfect for me.
Dress shopping was such a lovely experience. I came with my friend and bridesmaid molly (who actually was the one who booked all my dress appointments as I was not organised at all). Then my now wife and my now mother in law came with me to make my final decision.
What was your favourite part of your wedding day?
Walking down the aisle together instead of being given away(Not our vibe) Plus there is no way either of us would have been able to deal with a room full of people staring at us without the other by our side. We also spent the night before together and got ready all together in the morning with our full wedding party. It made it such a relaxed no pressure vibe and Chloe was right there to keep me chill.
Honourable mentions to being able to have our dog belle come the venue, disposable cameras to catch some wild moments and a confetti toss with dried flower petals made by one of our close friends mums from her own garden. (And managing to break the knife during the cake cutting )
Any changes? (Things you wish you’d done or wish you hadn’t!)
Enforce boundaries early. This is your day, don’t let others put their standards and expectations on you. This includes guest list!
Any tips for brides to be?
Make sure people are fed. Hungry guests are cranky guests. We had so many people remark on how well fed they were.
We gave our bridal parties a choice between dress or suit in order to make sure everyone felt comfortable which was met with rave reviews
We made sure we used vendors that we felt super comfortable with. Special shout out to Emma and Evie our hairdressers of the last ten years who knocked our wedding hair and the bridal parties out of the park
Also if you’re more confident doing it yourself, do it! I knew I would never be happy with someone else doing my makeup so I just did it myself, way less stress
